Police have released the identity of a Fort Myers man who died Wednesday evening after being ejected from a motorcycle.
Scott Edward Wheeler, 24, of Fort Myers, was driving a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle east on Pine Island Road when he collided with a vehicle at about 5:57 p.m., at Skyline Boulevard. Wheeler, an off-duty Lee County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer, was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries, dying on scene.
The vehicle, a 2002 Mitsubishi Diamante, was being driven by Patrick Stephen McKart, 20, of 1745 Red Cedar Drive, Apt. 3, Fort Myers. He was driving west on Pine Island when he approached Skyline. According to police, he turned south at Skyline into Wheeler’s right-of-way.
Wheeler attempted to stop, skidding, but could not. Witnesses told police that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. Wheeler struck the passenger side of the vehicle and was ejected.
McKart was not injured in the accident.
Lt. Anthony Sizemore, spokesman for the Cape Coral Police Department, reported that the crash was not alcohol or drug related.
“It’s still being investigated,” he said.
Wheeler, a Sheriff’s Office corrections officer since 2008, is the city’s first traffic fatality for 2010.
