Tour de Cape hits the road this weekend

2 min read

Today marks the return of the Tour de Cape, the 20th time the event will bring hundreds of cyclists, runners and fitness enthusiasts to Cape Coral.
Though Friday marked the event’s “party night”, according to Cape Harbour’s event coordinator Glenda Swager, Saturday and Sunday will mark the event’s real draw, a 5K run and bike tours of up 100 miles.
“Saturday and Sunday is when the feet and the pedals meet the road,” Swager said.
Swager is expecting more than 500 people to take part in both the run and the bike ride, a number that at least meets last year’s attendance totals.
“The day of the race there could be a lot more, but a lot of people wait until they see what the weather is going to do,” she said.
Unfortunately, early registration fees will no longer be available, but the fees and start times for the events are as follows:
n The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, check-in time is from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 am. The cost is $20 per individual. Lunch is included
n A family bike ride begins 11a.m. Saturday, check-in time starts at 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per family member. Lunch is included.
n There are four bike rides available on Sunday. The 100- mile ride begins at 7:30 a.m., the 62-mile ride begins at 8 a.m., the 30-mile ride begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 15-mile ride begins at 9 a.m. Check-in times for the various rides are from 6:30 – 8:30 am. Prices are $35 per individual, and lunch is included.
n A Ride and Run combination is also available, which includes the 5K run and choice of bike ride on Sunday. Lunch is included for the price of $40.
The second year that Cape Harbour has held the event, Swager said Tour de Cape brings people from around the region to Cape Coral, ready to hit the road.
“They’re rugged people,” Swager said of the cyclists and runners. “They come out in their shorts and short sleeves and they’re ready to go.”
Parking will be available on the first two levels of the parking garages at Cape Harbour, and parking along the “north shore” also will be available. The “north shore” is where Cape Harbour also funnels traffic during their wildly popular New Year’s Eve event.
