Taste of the Cape to benefit Oasis High athletics programs

3 min read

The athletic department for Oasis High School is holding a fund-raiser, Taste of the Cape, on April 9.
Athletic Director Jason Bowman said this is the first year that all of the sports programs have become fully sanctioned at Oasis High School.
“Our program is developing,” he said.
Bowman said out of the 351 students enrolled at Oasis High, between 130-135 participate in one of the sports. Those sports include swimming, golf, six-man football, volleyball, cross country, track, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball, tennis and cheerleading.
The athletic program currently costs up to $60,000 a year to run. Bowman said as the student population grows, so will the cost to run the athletic program.
The program will face an increase in costs during the 2012-2013 school year when the football team becomes an 11-man team.
He said instead of selling magazines or candy, he wants to hold events twice a year to get the community involved while raising funds for the program.
The fund-raiser is helping Bowman be “self-sufficient and pay for all of our athletic needs.”
“Fund raising is a big necessity for us,” Bowman said because every dollar that they raise is one less dollar taken out of the school’s general fund. “It’s a bonus for the school.”
The Taste of the Cape will be held on April 9 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Oasis High School.
Tickets for food and drinks will be sold for $1 for Starbucks, Candy Station, Mimi’s Cafe, Chef “J” Bistro, Sabitino’s and more. Bowman said the money raised will be split 50/50, so the school and the vendors receive half of the funds.
The event will also include a free kids area, Bowman said, which will feature Easter egg painting, face painting and more on the tennis court. A special tribute to the troops, along with performances by Paradise Cheer & Dance, Dance Dimensions, Oasis High School Chorus and Extreme Martial Arts will take place. A silent auction will also take place during the event.
Light 93.7 will provide a live radio feed at the event for a good portion of the event.
On Aug. 28, Bowman said the school held the first fund-raiser for the athletic department. He said he received a lot of great feedback from those who attended Shark Fest.
Bowman said he hopes the two events will grow enough in the next five years, so the money raised will pay a big portion of the athletics program.
