A Cape Coral man apparently shot himself by accident on Memorial Day.
At about 12:44 a.m., Cape police responded to a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Fire Station 8, at 707 S.W. First St. Medics told officers that a woman brought her husband, who had been shot, to the fire station.
EMS had immediately transported the man to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Police then responded to the couple’s home, located in the first block of Northwest 38th Place. The wife reported that she got up, turned the TV on and went into the bathroom. While in the bathroom, she heard a loud bang and she returned to the bedroom.
The woman’s husband told her that he had shot himself, a police report states. She wrapped her husband’s arm and they went to the fire station.
The husband told police that he had been paranoid since burglaries near his home in December. He said he sleeps with a gun under his pillow and he was adjusting it when it went off. The bullet hit his right forearm and right leg.
Officers located a 9 mm pistol under a pillow in the couple’s bedroom.
It was determined that no crime had been committed.
As of Tuesday, the man had been discharged from the hospital.
In a separate weekend incident, Cape police responded to a request for an officer at about 9 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 1700 block of Northeast Seventh Place. A woman told police that she had accidentally fired a round from her .22-caliber handgun.
The bullet was found lodged in the metal frame of a sliding glass door.
According to the report, the woman stated that she thought the chamber was empty on her gun and that she accidentally pulled the trigger. She said she was the only one home when this happened.
No injuries were reported.
