Nearly $14,000 reported stolen from Cape dentist’s office

2 min read

A Cape Coral dentist’s office reported nearly $14,000 had been stolen.
According to a police report, an office manager was talking to a previous patient when she was made aware of deleted cash payments to the caller’s account. Further investigation revealed that unapproved changes had been made to several patients’ charts.
The woman told police that the office has a tracking system in place to chart deletions made to patients’ payment methods and totals. These are kept in a log and saved on the server, unknown to the general employees.
A check of the system revealed deletions of charges for several patients between June 2009 and December 2009, according to the report. There had also been changes to patients’ charts, which also had the handwriting from two former employees.
Over the six-month period, $13,845 in cash transactions went missing.
The woman told police that one of the former employees had been laid off in August 2009, and the other quit later in December to pursue a better job.
