Cape Community Foundation to present Tabor Award Nov. 2
The Cape Coral Community Foundation is set to award its highest honor next week for outstanding philanthropic work in the community.
The awards banquet will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 5:30-8 p.m., at The Resort at Marina Village at Tarpon Point.
The 2011 Tabor Award, named after first recipient and lifelong Cape resident Elmer Tabor, is entering its fifth year.
The award represents the best of the best, recognizing those in the community who go above and beyond the call of duty.
“This award focuses on so much more than just saying someone is philanthropic,” said Beth Sanger, executive director for the Community Foundation. “We look at people who really dedicated their adult years to giving back because they wanted to see their city thrive and be successful … this goes beyond generosity.”
Past recipients have included not only Tabor, but former Gulf American employee and city historian Paul Sanborn, Boots and Earl Tolles and last year’s recipients, Barbara Watt-Biggs and Bob Biggs.
Sanger was tight-lipped about this year’s recipient but gave the following hint: “It’s a very committed individual who has always tried to do everything in his power to make the city thrive and improve.”
November is “Philanthropy Month,” according to Sanger, and the award gives the non-profit agency the chance to single-out those in the community who have shown outstanding leadership and dedication.
“It’s for that person who wants to give their blood, sweat and tears to their community and inspire generations to come,” Sanger said, adding, “We’re looking to inspire our future leaders.”
The award is part of the community foundation’s annual meeting, during which it will also hand out its annual grants to community organizations, including $10,000 for the Senior Services Capacity Building Grant.
“Our mission is to focus on all components of what makes a community work,” Sanger said.
