City Manager John Szerlag has appointed Donald Cochran as Fire Chief for the Cape Coral Fire Department. Cochran has been serving as the interim fire chief since the resignation of former Chief Tim Hayes in November 2013.

“Chief Cochran stepped up last year and provided the leadership expected by the rank and file and support staff within his department,” said City Manager John Szerlag in a prepared statement released Friday. “He has performed exceptionally during this time, and his experience and professionalism will keep our Fire Department moving in a positive direction.”

Cochran is a 24-year veteran of the Cape Coral Fire Department. He started his career in 1990 and moved through the ranks to the position of district chief before accepting the interim chief appointment. Cochran has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Public Safety Management. He has served as the leader of the Cape Coral Fire Department Hazardous Material Team and holds several certifications including Fire Service Instructor and Fire Safety Inspector. Cochran was named the 2013 Firefighter of the Year by the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce partnering with FOS Furniture.

“Chief Cochran has earned this opportunity through his work ethic and dedication to our community,” said Szerlag. “He has proven to be a valued member of our executive team, and I look forward to working with Chief Cochran as we move forward.”

Cochran’s salary will be $120,000.
