Barefoot Beach ranked second on 2014 Top 10 Beaches list
Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs has been ranked in Dr. Beach’s Top 10 Beaches for 2014. Again. And this time it’s listed in the No. 2 slot.
The top 10 list of beaches produced annually by coastal expert Stephen P. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, named four winning beaches in Florida and three in Hawaii. Barefoot Beach came in second following top winner, Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, HI.
The director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, Florida International University, the scientist bases his evaluation on 50 criteria, including sand and water quality. Details are available at DrBeach.org.
Considered America’s foremost beach authority, Leatherman has reviewed, evaluated and rated beaches and coastal areas throughout the world for more than 23 years. In 2013, Barefoot Beach was ranked No. 6 and described as:? ?”This beach in Southwest Florida is 8,200 foot long and located in a 342 acre park. The surf is gentle with waves generally being measured in inches, and the water is very shallow, making this a great beach for bathing and swimming for families. The sand is fine and contains many small shells.”? ?
Captiva Island was previously ranked by Dr. Beach as one of the country’s most romantic beaches noting as its key features its “abundance of shells and overall tranquility.” And Sanibel Island has been ranked as “Best Walking Beach.”?
