Man dies from injuries suffered in April ATV accident

A Cape Coral man who lost control of an ATV last month and crashed has died from his injuries.

As of Tuesday, Andrew Casey Baldwin, 33, of 2223 S.W. 50th Lane, had passed away at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken April 27 following the single-vehicle accident in the southwest Cape.

At 6:55 p.m., Baldwin was headed westb on Southwest 50th Lane on a Yamaha ATV in a residential neighborhood. According to police, he accelerated rapidly to at least 30 mph in the 2300 block and lost control of the vehicle. The ATV veered left, turned sideways and hit a mailbox.

The ATV rolled over and Baldwin struck the driveway of 2316 S.W. 50th Lane with his head. The vehicle then continued west, where he and it struck a palm tree before coming to a stop.

Baldwin was located against the tree with the ATV on top of him, police reported.

He sustained life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted to the hospital in a Medstar helicopter. According to officials, hospital staff advised that Baldwin had massive head and internal injuries.

He reportedly was not wearing any safety gear at the time of the accident.

Police reported that alcohol was a factor. Baldwin had a blood alcohol level of 0.340.
