Dallas conference:Mayor reports successful trip
Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki has returned home from a five-day trip to the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Dallas.
She and Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson were among a dozen mayors from Florida cities attending the conference.
“I’d say we had a lot of representation at the conference,” said Sawicki. “There was a lot of great networking and seeing what solutions a lot of other cities going through some of the same things we are have done.”
Sawicki sat on two committees along with Henderson and sat in on water quality and tourism seminars among other topics.
“The seminars ran from 7:30 in the morning til we went to dinner at night,” said Sawicki. “We heard from Phillips Lighting, who have a new LED bulb that costs $9 and lasts 22.8 years. We’re trying to work with them to see if can do something with streetlights in Cape Coral.”
More than 300 mayors from all over the country attended the conference.
“When I left about 89 mayors had signed a clean air resolution and a water quality resolution,” said Sawicki. “I did not sign them yet because I wanted the city manager and council to look at it first. They contain several things that we already are doing, like the Reverse Osmosis Plant and LED lighting, energy efficient things.”
Sawicki said she will give a report to council on the first Monday they meet after the summer hiatus.
