A North Fort Myers woman was critically injured Friday after she lost control of her car on State Road 82 and veered off the roadway nearly 600 feet before striking a tree.

Kasey Eileen Jackson, 22, of 38101 Still Lane, was pulled from her burning 2006 Mitsubishi by a witness to the single-car crash, officials said, adding she had sustained a serious head injury and was unconscious.

“Jackson was trauma alerted and has life threatening injuries at this time,” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement issued Saturday.

The front-seat passenger, Jessica Lynn Armstrong, 20, of 4211 33rd Street S.W., Lehigh Acres, was able to get out of the car without any injuries.

The crash happened at approximately 6:55 p.m. at State Road 82 and Shawnee Road.

The crash investigation that revealed the the car was traveling east bound on State Road 82 “at a very high rate of speed.” The Mitsubishi left the roadway, traveled more than 560 feet before striking a tree, struck a second tree, then spun around into more trees and shrubs.

“During its impact with the trees the Mitsubishi burst into flames,” officials said.

The car was “almost fully engulfed” when the passerby rescued Jackson from the wreckage.

Investigators believe Jackson had “passed out or fell asleep while driving, which caused her to lose control of the Mitsubishi and crash” and that “alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.”

The investigation is on going.
