Special meeting:City charter school authority sets session

With the Cape Coral Charter School System in search of a new superintendent and the school year fast approaching, the system is scrambling to find someone who could fill the role.

On Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 3 p.m., the governing board will hold a special meeting at city hall in council chambers to discuss a transition plan in terms of finding a replacement for Angela Pruitt, who resigned on July 18 to return to the Lee County School District as the new executive director of human resources.

The meeting is open to the public.

Pruitt’s anticipated last day on the job is Aug. 8, and she said the meeting will determine what course the system will take moving forward as the school year begins on Aug. 18.

They need to determine who will be the interim and if they want to conduct a national search, look locally and what the board wishes in terms of a permanent replacement,” Pruitt said.

The board decided on a national search last year, only to choose a local candidate in Pruitt. She said from the time she applied until her hiring, it took about three months.

Pruitt said the board will have to decide how to progress once Pruitt leaves next week, whether it be to hire a principal to fill in, or to have it done by committee.

“I think there will be decision about an interim and then the next will be whether to do a full-scale national search, or revisit the candidates when I applied,” Pruitt said. “There are several options they have, and they will discuss those on Tuesday.”

Pruitt had never directly worked with a charter school system, but dealt with charter schools as a lead evaluator for Advanced Ed, the accrediting body for schools nationwide.

The City of Cape Coral Charter School System, one of the few city-run systems in the state, includes Oasis High School, Middle School and Elementary School, and Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.
