A Lee County deputy has been found at fault in a fatal crash involving a teen on a bicycle.

Deputy Doug Hood was issued a citation for careless driving on Friday following a near-two month long investigation by Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigators into the Aug. 22 crash that resulted in the death of 15 year-old Austin Dukette of Cape Coral, according to a release issued by the Cape Coral Police Department.

Hood was driving a marked patrol car.

“The investigation revealed a number of factors contributed to the crash to include environmental conditions, the computer in the patrol car, as well as dark clothing worn by Dukette and inadequate lighting on the bicycle,” the release states.

Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide investigators met with Command Staff from LCSO on Friday and issued the citation to Hood.

“At this time, the investigation is closed,” officials said.
