Southwest Florida Eagle Cam soars into Season 3

3 min read

The Southwest Florida Eagle Cam is back!

The area’s most beloved pair of bald eagles, Harriet and Ozzie, have returned to their nest and live streaming begins today, the first official day of Florida’s bald eagle nesting season. With the first two seasons of the cam reaching global success and garnering more than 26 million views and worldwide media coverage, the primary goals continue to focus on building a better experience for viewers, education and social sharing.

“Each year we strive to bring a better experience to our users,” said Andy Pritchett, project manager for the camera and son of landowner Richard Pritchett, in a prepared statement. “This season we launch an entirely new website with full HD streams, an enhanced chat feature and new social media channels.”

Similar to season two (October 2013-May 2014) this year’s streaming will feature two camera angles of the nesting tree in North Fort Myers. The first camera will be positioned in the same location as before and a second camera has been positioned in a tree 30 yards north with the functionality to pan and zoom on action happening around the nest tree, giving viewers various opportunities to appreciate the eagles and their surroundings.

Viewers can follow all the action through the camera’s new website, the official Facebook page, Twitter feed, Instagram account, Tumblr page and YouTube channel. Teachers or groups looking to use the cam as an educational resource or class project, can contact the SWFEC at info@southwestfloridaeaglcam.com

Similar to years past, the SWFEC has worked with wildlife officials and local biologists to insure the eagle’s safety and will not interfere or intervene with any natural events in the nest. The stream shows Mother Nature in its true form and some content may not be suitable for all audiences.

History of the Eagles

Harriet and Ozzie have been calling North Fort Myers their winter home for over twenty years and typically reside in the nest between the months of October to April. This active pair of birds have been laying eggs and raising fledgling eagles for the past several years. During season one (2012-2013) of the SWFEC, the eagle couple, whom mate for life, hatched & fledged two eaglets. In season two (2013-2014) the eagle couple hatched two eaglets, with one eaglet perishing after 6 weeks due to unknown causes and the other fledging the nest in early April.
