Teen fatally injured in rollover crash
A Cape Coral teen died Tuesday after he rolled the SUV that he was driving and was ejected.
Tyler Francis Richards, 18, sustained fatal injuries in the accident, according to officials.
At about 10:39 p.m., Richards was traveling northbound on Del Prado Boulevard South in a GMC Envoy. A Toyota Corolla, driven by an unidentified 17-year-old boy, also of the Cape, was also headed north on Del Prado. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling 70 to 80 mph in a posted 45 mph zone.
The Cape police reported that in the 3000 block, the front right of the GMC and the back left of the Toyota collided. Due to the collision, Richards lost control of the SUV and it crossed over the median sideways. The vehicle then entered the southbound lanes of Del Prado and rolled over several times.
During the rolling, Richards was ejected and came to rest on the sidewalk.
The SUV continued to roll, coming to a final stop in the parking lot at 3046 S. Del Prado Blvd., according to police. After the impact, the Toyota also drove into the median, but it then traveled back toward the east. The car drove off of the roadway, where it came to a final stop in a parking lot.
The crash closed all lanes of Del Prado for several hours.
Richard died on scene due to the injuries that he sustained, officials reported.
A passenger in the GMC, Joy Antoinette Stevens, 20, of the Cape, sustained minor injuries in the accident. Police reported that Stevens declined medical transport to a hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota was reportedly uninjured.
The crash is not alcohol or drug related, according to the police.
