Cape Coral Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday

2 min read

The next scheduled Household Hazard-ous Waste Collection Day for Cape Coral residents is this Saturday, March 21, at the Public Works Annex on Everest Parkway from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 75 percent of the materials brought to the collection will be recycled.

Last year, Cape residents dropped off 45,876 pounds of hazardous waste; 90 percent of which was recycled.

Household chemical waste includes unwanted products labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, and/or reactive. Since more than 92 percent of Florida’s drinking water is groundwater, improperly disposing of household chemical waste, such as burying used oil in backyards or pouring solvents into storm drains, can cause chronic groundwater pollution problems. Because of the threats to people, pets and the environment, proper use and disposal of these items is important.

Residents can bring items such as drain cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, paint (oil and latex), solvents, polishes and varnishes, compact fluorescent tubes and bulbs, car and boat batteries, household and rechargeable batteries, automotive fluids and antifreeze, gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuel, propane tanks, flares and ammunition, poisons, and fertilizers. Empty containers will not be accepted. For example, empty paint cans with solidified paint and empty automotive fluid containers should be disposed of in the regular household garbage. Empty aerosol cans should be put in a bin for recycling.

Electronic waste (computers, printers, televisions, microwaves, etc.) can be placed curbside for recycling on the day of regular household garbage pickup. Items will be tagged and collected by a special vehicle the following day. However, if they desire, residents may bring electronics for disposal on Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Household appliances cannot be accepted.
