Free fishing derby: Kiwanis to hold annual event for kids April 4
Children will have an opportunity to try their hand at fishing in Cape Coral – for free.
Hosted by the Cape Coral Kiwanis Club, the 27th annual Free Fishing Derby will be held April 4 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club fishing pier. The event is open to youth ages 5 to 15.
No advance registration is necessary, but the derby is limited to the first 400 children to check in.
Check in begins before 8:30 a.m. at the pier; younger participants should be accompanied by an adult.
The children will receive their own rods and reels, plus bait that will be provided by the Kiwanis.
Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners for the largest fish; one is also awarded to the child who catches the smallest fish. Bicycles will be given away as door prizes.
The Kiwanis Club urges all parents or guardians to attend.
According to the club, the goal of the event is to get more children involved in fishing.
