Report: Teen rides bike into truck’s path

2 min read

A truck-versus-bicycle accident over the weekend sent a teen to the hospital.

On Sunday, a Dodge truck, driven by Joshua T. Corkhill, 22, of San Carlos Park, was traveling south on Santa Barbara Boulevard, South, in the middle lane. At the time, an unidentified 14-year-old boy was riding a bicycle south on Santa Barbara on the sidewalk on the west side of the road.

At 2:50 p.m., the teen reportedly yelled, “Let’s cross the road right now,” to another juvenile with him in the 900 block. The teen then immediately rode off the sidewalk directly to the left and into the truck’s path.

Corkhill veered left in an attempt to avoid the teen, but the front of the bicycle struck the truck. The outside passenger rearview mirror then struck the teen in the head and forced him to the ground.

The truck did not drive over the bicycle or the teen.

The teen sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident and was trauma-alerted to a nearby hospital via an ambulance. He was later airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.

The teen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash as required by law.

Corkhill did not sustain any injuries in the accident. His two passengers in the truck – Colette E. Williams, 20, of Atlantic Beach, and Brian McGrath, 25, of Cape Coral, also were not injured.

The crash is not alcohol or drug related.
