A teenager on a skateboard was critically injured Tuesday night after he was struck from behind by a van.

Matthew Stephen Sheung-Burden, 18, sustained life-threatening injuries as he was skateboarding near the center of the outside lane in the 1000 bock of Embers Parkway W. at 9:40 p.m. and was hit by a van driven by Richard Michael Heisler, 32, of Cape Coral, police said in a release issued Wednesday.

“This portion of Embers Parkway West has poor lighting” police said, adding that Sheung-Burden “was wearing new dark colored clothing.”

Sheung-Burden was transported to a local hospital as a trauma alert and was listed in critical condition in the facility’s ICU unit Wednesday morning, police said.

Heisler was not injured.

The roadway was shut down for several hours while police conducted an investigation.
