Cape residents advised to follow mandatory two-day watering schedule
A slow start to the rainy season is causing some concerns in Cape Coral as levels in the city’s freshwater canal system continue to decline due to dry conditions and overuse of the irrigation water, according to city officials. The city is advising residents to adhere to the mandatory two-day watering schedule to conserve the irrigation supply. Officials state that has not been happening as nearly 13 million gallons of irrigation water are being used on any given Tuesday, which is a non-watering day.
“We expect the rainy season to kick in and replenish the system; however, several days of consistent rainfall are needed to bring canal levels up,” said Utilities Director Jeff Pearson said in a release from the city. “Conservation is important at this time.”
Cape Coral’s irrigation water is supplied through the city’s water reclamation plants and supplemented with canal water from the freshwater system. Total irrigation use is nearly 10 billion gallons each year.
Here is the two-day schedule in effect for all of Cape Coral:
– Monday and Friday:
Midnight to 4 a.m. for addresses ending in 0
– Monday and Friday:
4 a.m. to 8 a.m. for addresses ending in 1
– Wednesday and Saturday:
Midnight to 4 a.m. for addresses ending in 3 and 5
– Wednesday and Saturday:
4 a.m. to 8 a.m. for addresses ending in 7 and 9
– Thursday and Sunday:
Midnight to 4 a.m. for addresses ending in 2 and 4
– Thursday and Sunday:
4 a.m. to 8 a.m. for addresses ending in 6 and 8
Non-residential, duplexes and other multi-family units can water on Monday and Friday from midnight to 8 a.m.
