$4.9 million road resurfacing project begins on SR 31 near Lee/Charlotte line

Motorists using SR 31 north of the Lee County/Charlotte County line can expect lane closures as a road resurfacing project due for completion early next year gets under way.

Most of the lane closures are expected to take place at night and drivers can also expect trucks and vehicles entering and exiting the roadway, officials said.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s contractor, Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC., has started work to resurface 12 miles of SR 31 from the Lee/Charlotte County line to CR 74 (Bermont Road) in Charlotte County.

During the first week of construction, which began this month, crews placed signs and erosion control (silt fence) along the project limits. This 12-mile project includes resurfacing the roadway, repairing existing drainage facilities, placing signage and pavement markings, and shoulder work. There are no lane closure restrictions for this project. Motorists should expect the majority of the closures to occur during nighttime/overnight hours throughout the duration of the project. Variable message signs have been placed to alert drivers that construction activities are underway.

Law enforcement will be on site during nighttime lane closures.

Crews will resurface the roadway after completing other work. After the final layer of asphalt has been added, a “cure period” lasts about 30 days. After the asphalt has cured, crews will add permanent striping to the roadway. This work takes approximately one week.

Estimated project completion is early 2016. Project cost is $4.9 million.

“We would also like to remind motorists to use caution and plan extra travel time while driving in this area,” FDOT officials said in a prepared statement.
