Resident’s condition improving at hospital
A woman was improving at the hospital on Tuesday following a recent accident on U.S. 41.
Amy Slaughter, 61, of Cape Coral, was listed in good condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where she was taken on May 26 after the crash on 41, just north of South Airport Road, officials reported.
Slaughter was driving a Dodge Magnum southb on 41 in the right lane at a high rate of speed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. At 12:51 p.m., the front of the Dodge hit the rear of a Honda Element, being driven by Linda Damato, 65, of North Fort Myers, also traveling southbound on 41.
FHP officials reported that the collision forced the Honda into the median, and the Dodge continued southbound out of control until it crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes. The front of the Dodge then hit the left side of a northbound Dodge Ram, driven by Jorge Minaya, 41, of Fort Myers.
The impact forced the Dodge Ram into the center lane, where it then struck a Ford Expedition.
According to the FHP, the northbound lanes of 41 were blocked until wreckers removed the vehicles.
Slaughter was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.
Damato and Minaya sustained minor injuries and were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, along with a passenger in Minaya’s truck, Juan V. Serrano-Rivera, 43, of Fort Myers. All have been discharged.
The driver of the Expedition, Nely Campos, 26, of Fort Myers, also reported minor injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. As of Tuesday, she also had been treated and released.
Officials reported that no charges were filed against Slaughter; it was a medical event.
Campos was cited with driving without a license.
