Cape man injured in single-car crash discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital
A single-vehicle accident last week sent a 70-year-old driver to the hospital with injuries.
As of Tuesday, Marc J. Bierach, of 4014 S.E. 11th Place, Apt. 3, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken on Thursday after the crash, according to officials.
At 5:07 p.m., Bierach was driving a Nissan Rogue north on County Club Boulevard in the outside lane when he fail to negotiate a curve in the 4400 block. Police reported that the SUV’s right side tires left the roadway and entered the grassy area located between the road and the sidewalk.
Continuing north along the grass, the front right of the Nissan struck two street signs before returning to the road. Bierach then drove north toward the 4300 block, crossing both northbound lanes of the road, where the SUV’s front tires hit the curb of the median, traveling into the median.
Bierach struck another street sign, an oak tree and a concrete light post, according to police.
After striking the light post, the Nissan rotated and entered the southbound lanes of County Club. It then rolled onto its left side and slid north across the two southbound lanes. As the SUV slid, it flipped onto its right side and came to a stop in the driveway of a home at 4306 Country Club Blvd.
Police reported that the Nissan caught on fire and Bierach became trapped inside. Cape firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the flames.
Bierach was extricated through the SUV’s roof and trauma-altered to the hospital.
According to a report, police requested that Bierach provide a voluntary blood sample at the hospital for alcohol testing. He refused, but hospital staff reported that his blood alcohol content was .258.
The report also states that Bierach was traveling 50 mph in a 35-mph zone when he crashed.
Police indicated that a follow-up would be conducted with Bierach once he was released from the hospital in order to issue him a citation. He was found at fault in the accident but was not cited.
As of Tuesday, it was unknown if Bierach had been cited or charged in the accident.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities in the Cape this year, with eight of them DUI-related. Police officials reported that there were 10 fatalities in total in 2014, of which five were DUI-related.
