CCCIA to host candidates’ forum
It may be one of the most important dinner meetings the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association will hold all year.
On Thursday, the CCCIA dinner meeting will also be a candidate forum, where those running in for city council in districts 2, 3 and 7 will have a chance to meet with the movers and shakers in the construction industry at Palmetto Pines Country Club starting at 5:30 p.m.
The CCCIA tries to hold these kind of meetings any time there’s an election. Last year it held a forum for the Board of County Commissioners and for the Florida House of Representatives.
“We figure that with three seats up for grabs and this being a Cape Coral-based organization, we are focusing on this race,” said CCCIA Executive Director Bill Johnson. “There are other races coming up that we will cover once the general election comes around.”
The goal, Johnson said, is to inform the CCCIA membership of each candidate before they go to the polls. They will meet with the candidates for a networking session.
Following dinner, the candidates will take the stage for a more formal presentation as part of the group’s regular membership meeting.
Each candidate will give a one minute introduction and will be broken down into their respective districts to answer questions about the issues from moderator Brian Rist.
The audience will be allowed to ask questions to the candidates before they give their one-minute closing statements. The candidates will be available to answer any other questions following the meeting.
Johnson said the CCCIA is a non-profit, politically neutral organization that doesn’t support or endorse any candidates. He did say the organization values how quickly the Cape has grown and hopes the candidates will keep up the momentum if elected.
“We’re looking to see what candidates have the city’s best interests in mind,” Johnson said.

Cape Coral municipal elections are non-partisan, citywide elections, meaning all registered voters may cast a ballot in all races regardless of party affiliation and the district in which the voter resides. (Council candidates must, however, live in the district they seek to represent.)
The Primary Election is Sept. 15. The General Election, among the top two vote getters in each race, is Nov. 3.
