Farmers market coming to Marinatown

2 min read

After several months of hard work, North Fort Myers residents soon will have a farmers market of their own.

The North Fort Myers Civic Association was able to attract Local Roots LLC, a local company that puts on some of the biggest famers markets throughout Lee County, to commit to a Friday morning market at Marinatown off Hancock Bridge Parkway beginning in December and running through March, as by county law.

“They’re experienced and put on nice markets. We have been discussing this for three or four months,” said Michael Land, Civic Association president. “We’re hoping for the first week in December and we’re looking to also be able to sell local homemade crafts.”

Jean Baer, one of the owners at Local Roots, said Land approached her company over the summer. After much discussion, the two sides agreed to work together last week.

“He asked us if we would want to help organize this market. We looked at some locations and settled on Mariniatown,” Baer said. “Famers markets bring a sense of community and that’s one of the first steps is to create something where you can have a cup of coffee and a bagel, and buy products from local growers.”

Vendors at the markets will sell seasonal local fruits and vegetables, as well as cheeses, meats, breads, nursery stock and other items. Baer said these markets can draw upwards of 3,000 people.

Baer said they’re trying to assemble local vendors. Anyone interested can contact her on their website.

Land said the objective is to help the local farmers, which is a segment of the population nobody knows exists.

“We want to get them some exposure on our Website. For the patrons, we want to give them a community atmosphere,” Land said. “We want to give them entertainment as well.”
