Child injured in crash remains hospitalized in Tampa; two drivers treated, released from Lee Memorial
Two drivers have been released from the hospital after a serious traffic accident on Tuesday.
Sophie V. Gordon, 34, and Vito A. Losurdo, 49, had both been discharged as of Thursday from Lee Memorial Hospital, where they were taken following the crash in Cape Coral, officials reported.
The sole passenger in Gordon’s vehicle, Noah Gordon, 11, sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident and was also taken to the hospital. He was later airlifted to Tampa for further treatment.
As of Thursday, his current condition was unknown.
According to Cape Coral police, Gordon was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser east on Northeast Pine Island Road when she tried to turn north onto Northeast 24th Avenue at 8:48 a.m. At the same time a Mack dump truck, which was being driven by Losurdo, was headed west along Pine Island.
As the Chrysler began to cross the westbound lanes of Pine Island, Losurdo applied the brakes. The truck began to skid, and its front end struck the right rear end of the Chrysler, the police reported. The truck continued to head west, then tipped over on its side, left the road and stopped in a ditch.
After the collision with the truck, the Chrysler spun and struck the median of Northeast 24th Avenue. Continuing to spin, the vehicle traveled west, and its right side hit the front of a Hyundai Sonata stopped at the intersection in the southbound lanes of Northeast 24th Avenue, according to the police.
Following the impact, the Chrysler continued to travel, crossing all southbound lanes of 24th Avenue, the police reported. It then left the road and came to rest in the northeast corner of the intersection. The Hyundai was pushed slightly backward due to the collision but came to rest near its original location.
Gordon and Losurdo were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai, Jennifer M. Joanis, 20, was not injured in the crash.
According to police, alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the accident.
