A motorcyclist has been released from the hospital after he and a Cape Coral driver collided.

As of Tuesday, Matthew Brethauer, 25, of North Fort Myers, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken Jan. 24 following the crash on Bayshore Road, according to officials.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Brethauer was headed west on a Harley-Davidson Sport. He was traveling behind a Hyundai Elantra, driven by Kelly Driskell, 35, of the Cape. As they approached the intersection of U.S. 41, Brethauer accelerated into the right lane at about 3:16 p.m.

Driskell then changed lanes into the right lane, according to the FHP. As a result, the left side of the motorcycle collided with the right rear corner of the Hyundai. Both vehicles came to a final stop.

Brethauer was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

The FHP reported that Driskell was not injured in the accident, nor was her passenger, Nathaniel Driskell, 8, also of the Cape. Both Driskell and the child were wearing seat belts at the time.

An improper lane change by Driskell was cited as the cause of the crash, according to officials.
