A Cape Coral mother has been cited in a crash that sent three to the hospital, including her son.

Sophie V. Gordon, 34, of 3607 S.E. 21st Ave., was issued a citation last week by the Cape police for violation of right of way when turning left in an intersection in relation to a Jan. 29 accident.

Officials reported that Gordon was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser east along Northeast Pine Island Road, when she attempted to turn north onto Northeast 24th Avenue at 8:48 a.m. At the time, a Mack dump truck was headed west along Pine Island, being driven by Vito A. Losurdo, 49.

As the Chrysler began to cross the westbound lanes of Pine Island, Losurdo applied the brakes. The truck began to skid and its front end struck the right rear end of the Chrysler, according to police.

The truck traveled west, tipped over on its side, left the road and stopped in a ditch.

Following the collision, the Chrysler spun and struck the median of Northeast 24th Avenue. Police reported that the vehicle continued to spin and travel west, where its right side hit the front of a Hyundai Sonata that was stopped at Pine Island and Northeast 24th Avenue in the southbound lane.

After the second impact, the Chrysler continued to roll, crossing all of the southbound lanes of Northeast 24th Avenue. It left the road and stopped in the northeast corner of the intersection.

The Hyundai was pushed slightly backward but came to rest near its original location.

Gordon and Losurdo, of 14775 Indigo Lakes Circle, Naples, both sustained minor injuries in the accident and were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. They have since been discharged.

Gordon’s son, Noah Gordon, 11, of 3607 S.E. 21st Ave., was a passenger in her vehicle.

Officials reported that Noah Gordon sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. After first being transported to Lee Memorial Hospital, he was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.

As of Tuesday, Noah Gordon was listed in good condition at that hospital.

The driver of the Hyundai, Jennifer M. Joanis, 20, 4501 S.W. 21st St., was not hurt.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the crash, according to police.

“This crash was the result of a vehicle driving east on Pine Island Road and turned north, directly into the path of a dump truck that was traveling east,” Sgt. Dana Coston, spokesman for the CCPD, said.

“The at-fault vehicle was T-boned by the dump truck directly on the passenger side,” he said.

Officials noted that Gordon’s attorney accepted the citation on her behalf.
