‘A Knight of Inspiration’ set for Tuesday
There will be songs that warm the heart, give you hope and inspire you to be in a better place.
About 180 singers from five different choirs will take the stage Tuesday for the annual chorus concert at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Admission is $5.
This year’s theme is “A Knight of Inspiration,” and will feature songs that will leave you wanting to climb a mountain when the 90-minute performance is over.
Gwen Gregg, chorus director for the past 11 years, said there will be many modern songs people should be familiar with, along with some standards.
“There are so many different styles of music. Even if we have popular songs in there or even pop, it will be very diverse,” Gregg said.
Among the songs will be the classic “Wind Beneath My Wings,” as well as modern fare with “Music of my Heart” by Gloria Estefan and a song from the movie Brave called “Touch the Sky,” Gregg said.
The boys will do “Hikuna Montada” and the girls will do “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson.
The show will open with a Haitian folk song. Also, all the girls are going to sing a fight song and the mixed choir will do a sign language song.
There will be a mixed choir, a general choir that anyone can be in, a women’s choir, a larger women’s choir with all the choirs, and all the men from the two different choirs. At the end, everyone will take the stage, including alumni, to sing the traditional farewell song “Old Irish Blessing.”
Gregg said unlike in previous years, there will be no solos, only two songs where the singers will do small individual parts within a choral piece. She said previous shows have left her “soloed out.”
“Sometimes I pick music that doesn’t lend itself to solos. I don’t know why. It just happened,” Gregg said. “I’d like to feature them, but in October we did a show where they sang mostly solos as well as in the PRISM concert.”
What the students will do, however, is write readings in between the songs, with the meaning of that word to them in relation to the song about to be sung.
For those who want to see solos, on May 16, there will be a show called “Red Knight Remix,” which will be done in the style of “The Voice.”
