A Cape Coral driver was improving Tuesday at a hospital after hitting a metal utility pole.

Mark Andrew Boyar, 47, was listed in fair condition at HealthPark Medical Center, where he was transported on March 29 following the crash at Del Prado Boulevard and Hancock Bridge Parkway.

Witnesses told the Cape police that a Ford F-150, driven by Boyar, was headed south on Del Prado in the outside lane and approaching Hancock. As the truck entered the intersection at 2:39 p.m., it veered right and drove off of the corner and onto the sidewalk, where it struck a metal utility box.

The Ford then struck a crosswalk pole and came to rest against the large, metal utility pole.

Several witnesses ran to Boyar and observed that he was having a medical episode, police reported. Boyar was helped from the truck and CPR was started. Lee County EMS responded to the scene.

Boyar was transported to a local hospital, then later taken by ambulance to HealthPark.

According to police, medical staff advised that he suffered a major medical event.

The accident does not appear to be alcohol or drug related.
