Man injured in accident released from Lee Memorial Hospital
A second person has been released from the hospital following a serious crash with injuries.
As of Tuesday, Derrick Anthony Walker, 30, of 305 Ariana St., Lakeland, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported after the accident, according to officials.
The Cape Coral police reported that Michael Grossman, 30, of 305 N.W. 22nd Place, was driving a Nissan Maxima west on Cape Coral Parkway in the inside lane on April 17. In the 300 block, he came up behind a second vehicle at a high rate of speed that was also westbound in the inside lane.
Officials estimated that he was traveling about 80 mph in a 45 mph zone.
A witness reported that Grossman changed to the middle lane to pass the other vehicle at 11:52 p.m., then immediately returned to the inside lane. In the process, Grossman lost control of the vehicle.
The Nissan entered the median, where it sideswiped two palm trees, according to police. The vehicle continued westbound in the median and struck a tree head on. The front of the Nissan wrapped around the tree and the rest was redirected counterclockwise, causing the vehicle to break into three sections.
The front of the Nissan stayed wrapped around the tree. The middle section traveled westbound, striking two more trees before stopping 80 feet away. The top portion and part of the front and back seats came to a stop in a driveway at 314 W. Cape Coral Parkway, 119 feet from the first impact.
Officials reported that Grossman was ejected. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Walker, who was the front seat passenger, came to a stop with the top portion of the Nissan in the driveway. A back seat passenger, Stephen Campanella, 31, of 1767 Four Mile Cove Parkway, Apt. 834, remained inside the main portion of the vehicle. Both were wearing seat belts, police said.
All three men were trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
At the hospital, it was learned that Grossman had a blood alcohol content of 0.230.
In the state of Florida, a BAC of .08 or greater is considered impaired.
On Tuesday, Grossman remained in critical condition.
Campanella has since been treated and released from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
