2 min read

Congressman Francis Rooney will hold his district’s Military Academy Day will be held on Saturday, May 27, from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in the Cohen Center Ballroom, on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University, 10501 FGCU Blvd S, Fort Myers. The event is free and open to all students, parents and guidance staff who are interested in learning more about the nation’s service academies.

“It is an honor to be able to nominate outstanding young men and women to our nation’s military service academies,” the District 19 congressman said in a prepared statement. “These schools offer a world-class education and provide leadership skills that will prepare these men and women for success in both military and civilian life.”

Each member of Congress may nominate up to 10 individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to their district. After nominations are submitted, each Service Academy selects which students will receive an appointment to attend. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Students applying to U.S. Service Academies require nominations from their federal representatives to be considered (The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination for appointment).
