‘239 Unity’ gun awareness violence day set for Saturday

The Dr. Ann Murphy Knight S.T.A.R.S. Complex will host “239 Unity,” a community fun day, on Saturday. Participants are encouraged to wear orange in recognition of gun violence awareness.

Outdoor activities for kids begin at 10 a.m. with bounce houses. Field day events, including a sack race, three-legged race, tug-of-war, and kite flying begin at 11. Outdoor events continue until 1:30 p.m.

The event continues with a “Wear Orange” unity march to memorialize community members who were lost to gun violence. Indoor activities follow, including a free water safety awareness activity and basketball with Hoops on Mission. Community workshops will focus on teen violence, conflict resolution, and human trafficking. The event closes at 4:30 p.m.

Founded by the City of Fort Myers in 1991, the S.T.A.R.S. (Success Through Academic and Recreational Support) Program was initiated to help the youth of the City of Fort Myers set and obtain goals for a bright future. The S.T.A.R.S. Program helps the youth of Fort Myers discover alternatives to drugs, crime, illiteracy and poverty through activities such as sports, music, dance, arts and academics.
