A Cape Coral bicyclist remained hospitalized Tuesday following a traffic crash last week.

Richard Kai Rex, 80, was listed in good condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken on Thursday after the accident at Southeast 47th Terrace and Vincennes Boulevard, officials reported.

According to the Cape police, Rex was riding a bicycle north on the sidewalk on Vincennes, approaching the intersection at Southeast 47th Terrace. He came to a stop on the southwest corner of the intersection and checked to see that vehicles traveling east and west on Southeast 47th Terrace were stopping.

At 7:13 a.m., Rex began to ride the bicycle north across Southeast 47th Terrace, to the right of the marked crosswalk, when a Ford Windstar proceeded into the intersection. Police reported that the Ford had been traveling west on Southeast 47th Terrace and stopped at the intersection before moving forward.

The front of the Ford collided into the right side of the bicycle, according to police. As a result, Rex was propelled over the hood and down the right side of the vehicle, coming to rest on the roadway.

Rex sustained possible life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Police reported that the driver of the Ford, Christine Catherine Ragonese, 85, of the Cape, was not injured, nor was the only passenger in her vehicle, Patsy Vito Ragonese, 64, also of the Cape.

Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, according to police.
