FMPD: Midpoint Bridge to reopen

2 min read

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, the power lines knocked down this morning on Colonial Boulevard during a traffic crash in front of Royal Palm Square have been repaired and the roadway, including the Midpoint Bridge, are about to reopen. The announcement came at 12:54 p.m.

Around 11 a.m. today, the FMPD reported that a red Dodge Viper lost control and collided with a light pole near the Fort Myers base of the Midpoint Bridge and caused power lines to fall onto Colonial Boulevard across all lanes. The vehicle debris was scattered across the roadway and additional poles sustained damage.

Preliminary FMPD reports indicate that the Viper and an unidentified white vehicle were approaching the Fort Myers entrance to the Midpoint Bridge when the white vehicle crossed the right-hand lane in front of the Viper to exit onto McGregor Boulevard. The driver of the Viper lost control and hit the concrete light pole.

Minor injuries were reported and the Viper driver was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The white vehicle fled the scene, the FMPD said.

FMPD reported that Florida Power and Light was quickly on the scene to make repairs.

Cape Coral Police also responded and rerouted traffic headed for the Cape Coral end of the Midpoint Bridge.
