FMPD: repairs from accident on Colonial Boulevard expected to take hours
The Fort Myers Police Department is currently resetting traffic lights to divert traffic from the area of an accident this morning on Colonial Boulevard in front of Royal Palm Square. The accident has shut down all lanes on Colonial and closed the Midpoint Bridge into and out of Cape Coral.
Police officers are also on scene directing drivers, as well. All drivers should use caution and avoid the Midpoint Bridge approaches.
According to the FMPD, around 11 a.m., a red sports car lost control and collided with a light pole near the Fort Myers base of the Midepoint Bridge and caused power lines to fall onto Colonial Boulevard across both lanes. The vehicle debris is scattered across the scene. Additional poles have sustained damage and may need to be cut down.
FMPD reports that Florida Power and Light is on the scene, and some wires are still live. Repairs are expected to take hours.
No reported injuries at this time.
Traffic from Cape Coral is backed up and stalled due to the incident. Cape Coral Police are on scene at the west entrance to the bridge diverting traffic.
Traffic on Colonial Boulevard is reported to be backed up beyond the US 41 overpass.
