Caloosahatchee river soil samples to begin today

2 min read

Beginning the week of June 15, drilling crews will collect soil samples in approximately ten locations in the Caloosahatchee River near Midpoint Bridge. Samples are being collected to obtain data about the river bottom. Crews are expected to work from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Collection of the boring samples is expected to take approximately three to four weeks to complete and is not anticipated to interrupt marine traffic. The barge and drill rig are expected to be moored at Horton Park each evening. Visitors to and boaters at Horton Park are asked to keep clear of the barge and all related equipment.

The work is taking place during the design and permitting phase of the Caloosahatchee Connect Project that will provide more reclaimed water to Cape Coral through an agreement with the City of Fort Myers. The environmentally beneficial interlocal agreement will construct a pipeline across the Caloosahatchee River to transmit reclaimed water from Fort Myers to Cape Coral. The additional reclaimed water will allow Cape Coral to provide water for irrigation use and fire protection purposes and reduce withdrawals from freshwater canals, which will help maintain water levels during the dry season.
