LeeTran recognized for innovation through national recognition program

The mobility-on-demand program developed by LeeTran, Lee County’s public transit provider, has been recognized with the prestigious “Bold Steps Award” at the state-level in the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) “Build a Better Mousetrap” competition.
The competition is a national recognition program for transportation innovation. This award highlights LeeTran’s commitment to revolutionizing public transportation and creating sustainable mobility solutions for the community.
LeeTran rolled out its first-ever mobility-on-demand initiative in 2022 in the Bonita Springs area. Following the successful launch of the ULTRA program, LeeTran began the planning process of expanding the program to Lehigh Acres thanks to a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Transportation. The mobility-on-demand ride-sharing model has gained popularity in recent years with well-known brands like Uber. The concept has expanded to allow public transit agencies to offer more personalized service for their community.
The “Build a Better Mousetrap” competition, organized by Florida Local Technical Assistance Program (FLTAP) is a highly regarded event that seeks to recognize and reward groundbreaking innovations across various industries. LeeTran’s Mobility on Demand concept stood out among the submissions, showcasing a visionary approach to transforming traditional public transportation.
“We are thrilled and honored to have been selected as the winners of the ‘Build a Better Mousetrap’ competition,” said Dominic Gemelli, LeeTran’s Transit Director. “Our Mobility on Demand submission represents a culmination of our team’s dedication to creating a more flexible, efficient, and user-centric public transportation system.”
LeeTran’s Mobility on Demand leverages cutting-edge technology and data analytics to provide a dynamic and personalized transit experience for residents and visitors alike. The concept enables passengers to request rides on-demand through a user-friendly mobile app, optimizing routes in real-time to reduce travel time and maximize convenience.
This recognition underscores LeeTran’s role as an innovative leader in the public transportation sector. The City of Bonita Springs played an integral role by partnering with LeeTran in order to ensure a successful launch of the ULTRA mobility-on-demand program. Through continued collaboration with partners, stakeholders, and the community, LeeTran looks forward to evolving public transportation in Lee County.
