Hold politicians accountable to promises

1 min read

To the editor:

Selling something, to an unsuspecting audience, under false pretense is and should be a crime. Campaigning and making promises to voters, in order to be elected, and then ignoring the promises after gaining public office should be also criminal, and should represent the grounds for immediate dismissal and arrest. Unfortunately, we have come to accept politicians as being professional liars. They believe the voters are stupid and they can satisfy any moment with timely mistruths. The voting public, it appears, is just too busy to unravel the slime, gets caught up in the mess, and then finds themselves stuck with an unworkable “barrel of monkeys.”

Politicians need to be held with their feet to the fire. Make a promise during a campaign, win the elected office, and know that there is no turning back from what you articulated. Anything short of this is unmitigated fraud and should be dealt with without hesitation. Politicians need to be reminded that they work for the people, they are easily replaced, and we expect honest, forthright, and dedicated service.

Nothing else is acceptable.
