Teen views valid

To the editor:

It appears to me that some people in this community have failed to grasp the concept of the minds of teenagers. That is primarily because the people voicing their opinion against these individuals are not teens, therefore do not understand where their views are coming from. Kimberlee Bias, Ashley Nieves, Nicholas Saracione, and Allison Heath have all had their letters published on Saturday, Nov. 28, and did exactly what any other letter writer in this paper does; voiced their own opinion. Whether it was a school assignment or not makes no difference, these letters came from the newspaper not the classroom. With this in mind, there is no room to judge them, they were put on the same level as any other person writing to the paper.

Scott Davis, who wrote a letter in response, clearly targeted these four in particular on the basis of their age. He states, “I wish to assist in their education if I may.” When reading each letter it is clear these teens need no assistance in their education due to the confident, insightful and fully legitimate responses. It is a shame to doubt the standards and intelligence of the Lee County School District’s schools and teachers. Teenagers in today’s world are becoming much more judicious than any generation before them. It should be applauded that they are publicly outspoken, and their instructors have evidently broadened their intelligence as much as they have.

Seeing an adult actually take that much of their time to rip strictly on these teenage individuals, but no other person who wrote in to the paper, is simply mind boggling, and is ultimately the least classiest thing one can do. It seems Mr. Davis cannot grasp the concept of this age difference, which undoubtedly calls for a difference in opinion.

Furthermore, in response to his statement, this country was built upon freedom, not personal responsibility. If an individual didn’t want to be responsible for himself then it constitutionally doesn’t matter, as long as any other federal laws were not broken. Telling these ambitious young adults they deserve an ‘F’ is first off uncalled for, and along with that is completely incorrect seeing as these were perfectly valid opinions.
