Twins worth it

To the editor:

Growing up in northern Wisconsin (Rice Lake) with my four siblings, teacher mother, and businessman dad, I realized how important a central sports team like the Minnesota Twins could be to the upper mid-west. Outside of “Gunsmoke”on TV my dad’s favorite recreation was watching those yesteryear Minnesota Twins with Bob Allson, Harmon Killebrew, and Bert Blyleven in the lineup.

Another newspaper recently brought up the brouhaha over the Lee County Commission spending $2,000 in public money to send Commissioners Tammy Hall and Ray Judah to the first game in the Minnesota Twins new baseball stadium is certainly childish at best. After all, the Lee County Commission probably spends $2,000 every minute of every day they are in business throughout the year. The question should be will they get a bang for the bucks? I tell you absolutely and unequivocally yes. The Minneapolis-St. Paul Twin outreach includes most of the upper mid-west; Iowa, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin to name a few. What is most bizarre is the suggestion by the paper that the stated goals to strengthen Lee County’s relationship with the Twins could best be achieved by professional staffers on the phone. An idea as ludicrous as that one could only come from a) either an Ivy League School, or b) the Lee County Public Education System.

The Lee County Commission in their best judgement decided to send Chairman Tammy Hall and Lee County’s longest elected official, Commissioner Ray Judah to this stellar event. This decision was certainly a wise choice.

Increased tourism is a key to future job growth in Lee County. This trip will reap a long-term positive outlook for Lee and Collier counties, which will be money well spent.
