To the editor:

Kayla Holder was recently stopped by two Cape Coral police officers. They did not witness any violation on the part of Ms. Holder, they were under orders from Sgt. Georgeanne Lytle.

According to the report, Ms. Holder was dating former Detective Steven Petrovich. He was the son of the former police chief of Cape Coral and has been sentenced to prison for two years for real estate fraud. The report also stated that he had previously dated Sgt. Lytle, who has since been demoted.

As Ms. Holder left the scene 25 minutes later, Sgt. Lytle shouted her home address.

Allegations that she used her position for personal gain and engaged in improper conduct were sustained. Supervisors recommended an 80-hour suspension with the demotion, which is very light punishment for such a serious abuse of power. Then Interim Chief Jay Murphy reduced the suspension to 24 hours. Former Sgt. Lytle said her actions were impulsive. Do impulses last for 30 minutes? Former Sgt. Lytle’s records show that she has been disciplined a number of times and that she had been fired from the Fort Myers Police Department. This seems to be a truly loose cannon.

What does it take to get fired from the Cape Coral Police Department?

Recently we have experienced Cape Coral police officers doing such things as pulling a gun on an under age smoker at a church function, an officer failing to put his car in park and wrecking several motorcycles at the Dek, etc. Now this.

When will we have an independent investigation into the qualification of Cape Coral police officers? When will they act forcefully upon their own officers to show the public they are trying to do the right thing?
