Ruth B. (O’Berry) Garcia

Ruth B. (O’Berry) Garcia, 85, passed away peacefully from this life on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012. A third-generation Florida native, she was born in Tampa on Aug. 28, 1926.

She graduated from Hillsborough High School and attended the University of Tampa. In 1965, she retired from Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan of Tampa, where she was executive vice president of construction loans and mortgage operations.

She moved to Lee County in 1968, working with her husband, George, in Garcia Construction Company, until his death in 1982.

She was very active in the North Fort Myers community, helping to establish voting Precinct 68 and the first public library in North Fort Myers.

She also served as officer or board member in many organizations, including the Suncoast Civic Association, Lee County Food Bank, Lee County Advisory Committee for Roads and Bridges, North Fort Myers Community Park and the North Fort Myers Fire Control and Rescue Service District. She was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary 10127, serving as treasurer for many years.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara O’Berry Moeller; sister-cousin, Joy Trebee; daughter, Mary Ann Mulligan and her husband, Mike; grandson, Brian Michael Mulligan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who love her dearly.

She was preceded in passing by her beloved husband, George Garcia; sister, Mary Frances O’Berry Manucy; and sister-cousin, Elizabeth Hamler Ward.

Through her life and her work in the community, she set an example of putting others before herself and will be missed by her family and her friends, including the residents and staff of Juniper Village in Cape Coral, where she lived for the last four years of her life.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 25, at the VFW Post 10127, 996 Pondella Road, North Fort Myers.
