Politics or patriotism?

2 min read

No one would dispute that the efforts of Woodward and Bernstein were instrumental in the resignation of President Nixon. After all, Nixon lied to the American people. The integrity of these two reporters was assured a place in history.

It appears now that Woodward and Bernstein will have a fair amount of elbow room wearing that mantle. The deafening silence of the current crop of mainstream reporters will also find a place in history. However I feel that it will not enjoy the place of hallowed ground.

Whereas there can be no excuse for President Nixon’s actions, how then can the American people, and the journalists on their vaunted pedestal, ignore the mounting lies and criminal acts of this current administration?

In the case with President Nixon, even the FBI was instrumental in uncovering the facts, so well displayed, that led to the resignation. If President Nixon could be forced to resign because of lies related to the Watergate break-in: what might be the proper outcome if President Obama was similarly investigated and held accountable, if found guilty?

Watergate did not involve the deaths of anyone. How does the Fast & Furious scenario measure in comparison, with its attendant deaths? We must add to this the deaths in Benghazi as well.

We have the criminally destroyed emails in the IRS scandal. The damage caused in the NSA scandal has yet to be tallied. At last count there were 24 various investigations in progress with this administration. As for lies from President Obama: he has no peers. Where is the press? Where are the new Woodwards & Bernsteins to secure their place in history?

The deafening silence I referred to in my opening remarks was not a statement of hyperbole but rather a sad indication of our current crop of journalists!
