Time for some middle ground
To the editor:
Fifty-plus years of failure certainly does not make our country look good. The embargo (sanctions) has failed. Committing terrorist and violent acts against Cuba did not work. This certainly set up a David and Goliath scenario. We need to find a middle ground.
There are many things which make this the opportune time to seek solutions to this problem. I am sure this will not make some people happy, in particular the Cuban American National Foundation. Perhaps we need to embrace a new sense of direction.
We must dispense with the fighting communism line; this is no longer a valid argument. Cuba is not a viable state. The only two viable communist states, Russia and China, are now not touting their ideology but their economic power.
This brings up North Korea. We help them end famines, but we continued the economic blockade against Cuba. That makes no sense.
We seem to have forgotten that there was a revolution in Cuba. Goals were to rid themselves of internal and external tyranny. They paid a very high price for this. We cannot expect to continue making demands which Cuba will not be able to meet and have no desire to meet.
Cuba will not allow itself to be placed in the same position it was pre-revolution.
As a country we need to find our proper position in the relationship with Cuba, get what we need to accomplish done, heal past wounds and start rebuilding Cuba.
I think the American people will welcome this. I also am sure it will help the other Caribbean states as well as Central American states. Let’s get it done.
