U.S. Postal Service is helping to find America’s missing children

2 min read

Since 1985, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers have delivered special mail once a week that often represents the last hope for families searching for their missing children.

To date, thanks to the dedication of letter carriers and a strong partnership with ADVO, now Valassis, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), 148 missing children have been safely returned to their homes.

The America’s Looking For Its Missing Children program has won widespread recognition as one of the nation’s most effective public service initiatives.

Postal carriers deliver a newly designed direct mail piece called RedPlum, which features larger color photos of America’s missing children with the tagline “Have You Seen Me?”

Also, the Postal Service publishes photos and information in the Postal Bulletin, which is distributed to all postal facilities and subscribers. This adds 700,000 postal employees to the list of people looking for America’s missing children.

To report seeing one of the missing children depicted on a RedPlum circular, call the NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (800-843-5678). For more information, go to www.missingkids.com or http//www.valassis.com/1024/Company/missingchild.aspx.

Mr. Zip’s Tip: For nearly 100 years, postal employees, charitable organizations, corporations and individuals have volunteered to help children and families in need have happy holidays by answering letters to Santa.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation – 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
