Post office recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month with special promotion
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the U.S. Postal Service is giving special recognition to those who currently have, are survivors of, or have passed away from breast cancer. It has re-authorized the sale of the semi-postal Breast Cancer Research stamp. The Breast Cancer stamps are available at your local Post Office, from usps.com, 1-800-STAMP-24 or by mail locally.
A special pink tree display will be set up at the Regional Cancer Center, 8931 Colonial Center Drive, Fort Myers, for the entire month of October. It will feature mail order forms for individuals to be able to purchase sheets of the special stamp. Pink circles will be added to the tree as ornaments with the name of a breast cancer patient, survivor or loved one lost specified by the purchaser. To obtain an order form stop by the Regional Cancer Center or call 573-9638.
The stamps have a retail value of $.55 and are valid for the normal $.44 postage for first-class mail. The $.11 difference goes to breast cancer research. Since July 1998, the first year the stamp was issued, $62 million in voluntary contributions has been raised for breast cancer research. Sales of the stamp have been extended until 2011.
Local Post Offices will also have special pink tree displays during the month. All sales clerks will have the stamps and circles available. Individuals purchasing a sheet of the stamps (20 stamps, $11) at any of these locations will be able to place the special circles on the tree or display there.
