Pink postal passion

Customers at post offices in Lee and Collier counties will be seeing pink this month. Pink trees will feature the names of breast cancer survivors, patients and loved ones lost to cancer. Businesses are encouraged to use breast cancer research stamps on their correspondence during the month of October to raise awareness of the fight against cancer.

The Breast Cancer Research stamp has raise $75 million for cancer research since it was issued in 1998. The special stamps, called “semi-postal” stamps sell for $.55 each with $.11 from each stamp going to breast cancer research.

Last year $20,411.60 was contributed to research from October breast cancer stamp sales in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Sanibel, Marco Island, Estero, Bonita Springs and Pineland. Postmasters are hoping to match or exceed that amount this year. For every sheet of stamps sold a tribute tag will be included.

The Breast Cancer Research stamps are also available by mail – send your check for $11 per sheet to Customer Relations, 79 Mid Cape Terrace, Cape Coral, FL 33991.

October is also a time for exploring and starting a hobby that is educational, entertaining and fits any budget. U.S. postage stamps celebrate American history, nature, art, culture and science. They remind us of important historical events, inventions, trends and people who have touched our lives.

Special lobby events from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ar scheduled to observe National Stamp Collecting Month. At these events the Save Vanishing Species “semi-postal” stamp will be featured. For each sheet of stamps purchased an opportunity to win framed stamp art and a stamp cachet envelope will be included.A collectible “Florida Funshine” postmark for Fort Myers or Naples will also be available.
