If only the entire tournament could have been played Friday night, it would have been less of a headache.

Instead, the North Fort Myers Babe Ruth 8U, 10U and 12U teams had to sit out an entire day due to rain. They moved the tournament to another field so the teams wouldn’t play in a quagmire, plus deal with more lightning and rain later that day.

As it turned out, the 12U tournament had to wait until Tuesday to be completed. The 10U title game was stopped in the fifth inning with North leading Cape Coral 11-10.

The 10U team started strong at Cape’s Pelican Baseball Complex. North waltzed to a 16-4 victory over Clewiston Friday. Weather was not a factor as Davin Hickman and Chris Ralston each hit home runs for North and scored three runs.

After the washout on Saturday, players returned to Pelican on Sunday to find all but one of the fields nearly submerged. This forced the 10U and 12U tournaments to be moved to North Fort Myers Community Park, where the fields were slightly drier.

The home field advantage didn’t help the 10U team much as it lost to Clewiston 21-15 as the weekend tournament became not so much which team was best, but more about what team would survive.

Ralston and Chris Simmons had three hits for North. Landon Estes scored twice and drove in two runs.

The rubber game was a back-and-forth affair that see-sawed until North took an 11-10 lead after four innings when the game was halted.

The 12U team also started strong as it outlasted Sanibel 11-6. Armando Cruz pitched into the fourth inning before Dakota Wendel took over to close the game.

North fell back into the loser’s bracket after losing to Clewiston 8-7, battling back from a 7-2 deficit in the sixth inning to tie the game before the big Blue walked off with the win.

Ethan Estes had two hits and scored three runs for North, which couldn’t overcome the 16 walks it allowed to Clewiston batters.

North ended up playing Sanibel again and took a 6-1 lead after three innings before the lightning alarm hit just as the third out was made to end the inning.

The games were set to continue at Pelican Field at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
