North Fort Myers High School Football head coach Dwayne Mack announced Friday morning he was stepping down from the position.

This past season marked the fifth year for Mack as the head coach of the Red Knights — a program that had found success under his tenure.

“Success is what you do with what you’ve got,” said Mack in a released statement. “In the past five years, I’ve been successful as a head coach because of those around me. I firmly believe that we all need to push ourselves towards greatness, and I have instilled this belief in my players throughout the years.”

Mack amassed a 37-16 record in five seasons as head coach at North and led the team to the playoffs in all but one season. Mack did find himself with a two-game suspension from the FHSAA in 2021 for violating recruiting regulations.

This past year, the Red Knights put together a strong first-round playoff win over Barron Collier before losing a heartbreaker to Dunbar 33-32.

“I want to thank (Principal Debbie) Diggs and (Athletic Director) Joe Bowen; your support has been unwavering,” Mack said. “I want to thank all my coaches for their help in making our program the best. Thank you to the parents and community who have championed our tam every step of the way.

“Most of all, I want to thank all the players I’ve coached throughout the years. You are why I’m here; it has been a pleasure. I am blessed to have been your coach and hope I have challenged you to pursue greatness on and off the field. This experience has given me a chance to be a head coach of a game I’m passionate about and to guide you men into their own futures.”

In his statement, it seems as if Mack will continue on in some capacity at North.

“Now is when I push myself again towards greatness and other growth opportunities here at NFMHS. This is not goodbye, but it is time for another coach to have an opportunity for greatness. Once a Red Knight, Always a Red Knight.”
